What is the theory of Continental Drift?
This theory is crazy, old, and pretty accurate. The theory is called "Continental Drift." This is when the continents drifted away from each other and are in their current spots today. It developed around the 1920's and was created by scientist Alfred Wegener. One day, Wegener was looking at his map and though to himself, "The continents fit together like puzzle pieces." That's just one piece of evidence Wegener discovered. Don't worry, he found more to his amazing theory of how the Continents Drifted. Not scientists believed Wegener's crazy theory because in order to believe him, we would have to forget everything we learned about. That would take a long, long time. Wegener also didn't have the mechanism. (how did they move?)
The first piece of evidence Wegener came up with was puzzle pieces, of course. He saw his map one day and literally cut the continents out and tried to piece them together. He also researched books on this topic according to a video we saw in Mr. Ellis's science class.
The second piece of evidence Wegener had was fossils of animals and plants on completely different pieces of land. He traveled around the world just to find these fossils and prove those other scientists wrongly. He found fossils from when the dinosaurs roamed this planet, modern day animals and insects, and different plants.
The last piece of evidence that Wegener found was similar rock samples and mountain ranges that looked like they've been split apart... Hmmm... What does that explain? Maybe when the continents split, the mountains went with the continent and the rocks fell.
